About Jamie

My work explores my experiences with mental health issues and traumatic events, through still life. I use objects that I associate with people in my life that have impacted my mental health, either in a positive or a negative way. My work aims to push the boundaries of what a still life can be, by setting the objects in situations relating to my experiences. I am interested in how my audience relates to my work through their experiences with mental health and the possible relationships to the objects. I produce my work in acrylic or oil paint, this is because painting soothes my mind, my ADHD is not a hinderance to painting, I can lose myself within the paint and focus all my attention to the present moment, the brush strokes, the thickness of the paint and the detail within the piece. I focus on realism within my work due to aphantasia; I cannot visualise imagery in my head, therefore, I base my work on reference images that I have taken. Within my work, I aim to break the stigma surrounding mental health.
